What Is Needed For Installation Of P2 Brake Controller On 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Question:

I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee with a toeing kit. I like the Tekonsha 90885. Is this a good choice? Do I need any thing else to connect it?

Great choice for a brake controller if you have electric brakes on your trailer. The Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885 is our most popular because it is easy to install and use.

If there is no connector at the rear of your Cherokee, I recommend part # C56208. This will give you a 4-way connector at the rear of your vehicle. This is a T-connector and plugs directly to the vehicle wiring.

You will then need part # ETBC7. This will use the 4-way connector and with the additional wires connected will furnish the 7-way and 4-way connector at the back of your vehicle. I have attached a photo that shows where the wires from the # ETBC7 need to be run.

If you want to use a no-drill mounting bracket for the new 7-way, I recommend part # C57202.

Since there is no plug and play connector for brake controllers on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee you will need to do some hardwiring to connect the P2.

The red wire would attach to the cold side of the brake stop light switch. Using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 will help identify which stoplight switch wire only shows voltage when the brake pedal is pressed.

The blue wire would attach to the brake wire that has been run from the connector at the rear of the Cherokee. The white wire would be grounded to the negative battery pole, and the black wire would attach to a 12V power source via the 20 amp circuit breaker included in the install kit.

When you are installing electrical components I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connectors and prevents corrosion.

If your Cherokee has the 7-way connector, the output circuit wire from the 7-way is already run up under the dash. Look for a dark green with a light green stripe wire that terminates up under the dash or behind the kick panel on the drivers side. This wire would connect to the blue wire exiting the brake controller. The black 12-volt power supply wire, the white ground wire and the red brake stoplight switch wire would all need to be connected.

The install kit # 5506 would work well. The black wire from the controller would connect to the positive battery terminal via the 30 amp breaker included in the kit. The white wire connects to the negative battery terminal and the red wire connects to the cold circuit of the brake stoplight switch. You will need a circuit tester to probe the various wires exiting the stoplight switch located at the top of the brake pedal. There will be several wires exiting the switch. Use the tester to probe each wire until you locate which wire only shows voltage when the brake pedal is pressed. Once located, tap the red wire into that circuit.
