Does Using Higher Rated Trailer Hitch than OEM Allow 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek to Carry More Weight
Question:
The dealer installed hitch has a towing weight of 1500 lbs and tongue weight of 200 lbs, which sounds like a class I hitch. if I use a class 3 hitch #C13135 does this mean I can use the higher tongue weight capacity that this hitch is capable of handling or am I still limited to maximum 200lbs tongue weight recommended by Subaru?

Expert Reply:
Even if a trailer hitch has a higher capacity than the one you are using on your 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek, you still need to go by the towing capacity of the vehicle as stated in the owners manual if it is lower. If the capacity of the vehicle was higher than the hitch, you would go with the lower rating on the hitch. So basically, you are limited to the capacity of the lowest rated component in the system.
But installing a 2 inch hitch, # C13135, still has advantages. The larger 2 inch receiver is compatible with more accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers, than the Class I Subaru hitch.
