How to Wire a Hayes Energize III Brake Controller in a 2002 Chevy Suburban
Question:
I am putting on of your Hayes energize III in a 2002 Suburban. It had an old controller. There is a thick red and blue wire coming down under the dash and a medium thick green wire. There is also a thin black and thin brown wire. How do I hook them up to the four wires on the controller?

For brake controllers like your Hayes Energize III item # HA81742B the white wire gets grounded, the black wire runs to a constant 12 volt power source, the red to a wire that only has voltage when brakes are applied typically the brake pedal switch, and the blue to the output circuit of the 7-way connector.
Since your Suburban has a different set of colored wires from a previous controller you will need to use a circuit tester like item # PTW2992 to check the functions of the wires you mentioned and line them up with the corresponding ones on the brake controller.
Additionally, if you do not want to mess with splicing wires and your Suburban came with a 7-way from the factory you can use the Custom Wiring Adapter for Hayes Brake Controllers item # HA81781-HBC.
