Troubeshooting Dim LED Trailer Tail Lights On Only 2 Lights
Question:
The running lights on one side of my boat trailer are fine. On the other side, the front light is fine, but the second one at the wheel is dim as is the back light with license plate light. Both of the dim lights are LED. They were fine for a while. I suspected the waterproof butt connector connection was loose as the lights were out at first but came on after some time on two separate occasions. The wire from the main plug runs to the side and is then connected with a waterproof butt connector the supply wire and wire to the front running light on one end, and the wire to the light at the wheel on the other end. At the wheel LED there is a similar connection with the front wire and the supply to the wheel LED light on one end, and the wire to the rear light on the other end. I redid the connection near the wheel but had the same dim light problem. I then tried it a second time. When I ed the wire running to the back light into the connector, the dimming occurred. I did not have a voltmeter. I had a new side LED light and connected it to the supply and holding it to the frame for the ground connection. It is still dim. I am thinking of replacing the wire from the front light to the wheel location. The wire from the wheel location to the back light was replaced recently. Do you have any suggestions to resolve this problem? I plan to take my voltmeter to test whether there is excessive voltage from the front butt connection to the wheel location.

It sounds like you likely have a ground connection issue on your lights versus a power wire issue. Since LED lights use so little power it seems odd the lights would be dim caused by the power wire. And since they use such little power even a small amount of corrosion/oxidation between the lights ground wire could cause issues. I recommend checking the ground connections first both connecting to the frame and the wiring inside the terminals.
