Hitch Recommendation For 2010 Jeep Patriot
Question:
We decided to get a Kuat Beta bicycle rack. We do not have a hitch yet. Would you recommend getting a 2 inch receiver hitch or the smaller 1 1/4 one for this rack? From other Kuat reviews we hear that the 2 inch version of the rack gives a lot of wiggle roomin the 2-inch receiver although secured by hand-tightening cam so we are worried the rack would wobble.

The Kuat Beta Aluminum Folding 2 Bike Rack, part # B202-2, is designed for a 2 inch receiver, so I recommend a hitch that has a 2 inch receiver opening for your 2010 Jeep Patriot. I have attached a link to an article that describes how to choose a hitch-mounted bike carrier.
When considering a hitch mounted bike rack, you will want to make certain you have enough clearance for the bike carrier from the rear bumper or rear mounted spare tire. Normally, we suggest a hitch should be installed first and then measurements taken so that you can be certain of clearance from the rear bumper. You could also then consider the type bike you are planning on carrying, since bikes have so many different handlebar styles. I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains how to take the measurements for clearance.
I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75712. This has a 2 inch receiver and requires no drilling for installation. If your Patriot has the tow hook installed, it needs to be removed for installation, but can be re-installed after the hitch has been installed.
Another item I recommend is the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # 63232. This will not only reduce the rattle when using the bike carrier in the receiver, but also provides security by locking the carrier to the hitch receiver as well.
You will want to check your owners manual or with your dealership to make sure you do not exceed the vehicle maximum towing or tongue weight capacity.
Since you are installing a hitch on your Patriot, I have included some links to other items we carry that may prove to be useful for you.
