Replacement 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector for a 2009 Toyota Tacoma
Question:
A car rear ended me and broke the 7- way tow connector. What I want to do is replace the stock harness with the 7 way and 4 way since the boat I tow only needs a 4 way for light and doesnt have trailer brakes. The second part of my question is I would like to relocate the connector. I also like to four wheel in my truck as well and during a camping trip I came close to breaking it off and would not like to damage it again. Would this be good product to use? I have an 09 Toyota Tacoma off road what would you recommend?

Using the 7 and 4-Way trailer connector, # HM40975-11998, is a good idea if the harness that plugs into the factory 7-Way also was damaged. Because one end of the harness included with the connector just has blunt cut wires, you will need to wire them in to the vehicle wiring by function as follows (the colors listed below are the harnesses colors, you will need to use a circuit tester such as # PTW2992 to determine the appropriate wire on the vehicle tow package wiring harness):
Red is Left turn and stop
White is Ground
Blue is Electric brakes
Green is Right turn and stop
Black is 12-volt power
Brown is Running lights
Yellow us Reverse lights
If the wiring harness part of the OEM 7-Way was not damaged, then you could use # C55774. Each of these connectors includes a mounting bracket that you could attach wherever works best for you. I have included a couple of videos showing typical installations of these connectors on other trucks.
