How Can The 30 Amp Service From A Generator Charge A Battery With A Higher Amperage Converter

Question:

Thanks for this info. A follow-up question is: Will my Onan 5500 generator charge more than 45Amps. Seems to me that 5500 watts divided by 120V is 45.8Amps so a larger converter would not help me because the generator won’t drive a converter to put out more than 45Amps. Does this make sense or am I confused? Thanks,

The generator provides AC amperage to your trailer which is about 10 times more powerful than DC amperage. The 30 amps that you get from it would essentially be 300 amps in DC power available for use. Converters like the # PD9245C charge your battery with DC so you would have more than enough to use a 45 amp converter or higher if you wanted. Just remember to check the battery to see the max amperage charge rate that it can handle before picking out your converter.

If you go higher than what you currently have you'll also need to ensure that the wiring is the correct gauge for the amperage you choose. In the installation instructions for each converter there's also a chart with the correct gauge for the specific amperage.
