Trunk-Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for 2007 Honda Fit Sport with Spoiler

Question:

Hi, In another post, an expert pointed to the HRF2 as a good fit for a Honda Fit. I have a 2007 sport w/ a spoiler: These run at about $250. Some things Ive read online suggest that a Allen Sports 102S Premium 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack might also work for cars with spoilers. These are less than $100. Would they work for me? thanks .

The Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 2 Bike Carrier, part HRF2, will properly fit some model years and versions of the Honda Fit but is not recommended for the 2007 Sport version. I verified this on the Hollywood Racks website. They show no trunk-mount racks for the 2007 Honda Fit Sport; they instead suggest installation of a hitch receiver to allow use of a hitch-mount carrier.

I also called my rep at Hollywood Racks to make absolutely certain. He advised that while the HRF2 will fit on your vehicle, the Fit has a soft bumper that could be damaged by the weight of the loaded carrier.

I also checked with Thule and Yakima, both prominent makers of quality bike racks, and neither offers a trunk-mount rack for your Fit Sport. This is because the vehicle manufacturer engineered the hinge on the rear hatch to hold the weight of the hatch, but not the weight of the hatch plus a loaded bike rack. The soft bumper is not designed to bear any weight.

I checked the Allen Sports website and their fit guide does indicate that their S-102 carrier will work on the 2007 Honda Fit Sport. However, just because a carrier will fit does not mean that it is necessarily a good idea to use it, for the reasons I noted above.

However, I do have a solution for you. We offer several Class I hitches for your vehicle, the most cost-effective being # 24776 from Draw-Tite. This 1-1/4-inch hitch bolts on with included hardware (no drilling or welding needed) and can be used with Class I 2-bike racks. Please note that you are limited to carrying two bikes even if your rack can hold three. Two helpful articles on hitch installation are linked.

This Draw-Tite hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 200-lbs but you will need to check your Fit owners manual (or with a local dealership) for a vehicle tongue weight rating. You must observe the lower of the two ratings; the total combined weight of carrier and bikes has to be within the lower of the hitch and vehicle limits.

I have included a link to our page for 2-bike Class I carriers that will fit this hitch. You can use the filters at the left margin to choose among features you prefer, such as racks that fold or tilt, racks that hold the bikes by their frames or their wheels and racks that include locks or not. I also included a helpful article that might help you determine your best option.

I would recommend the Curt # C18085 two-bike rack that easily holds two 45lb bikes and will protect your vehicle. I have linked an installation video for this rack. This rack provides a foot of clearance from the hitch pin hole. With it you can use the cable lock # e98891 to lock your bikes to the rack.
