Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport with 4.0 Liter V6

Question:

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer 2-door Sport. It has a 4.0v6 with 4 wheel drive. I am considering adding a transmission cooler so I will be able to pull a travel trailer that will weigh about 4400lbs when fully loaded. I will be moving this trailer 1400 miles, and should not need to tow it much more after that. Which transmission cooler will I need for this make and model truck, and are there any special tools that I will need in order to complete the installation? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Given the distance you are going to drive and the weight of the trailer compared to the size of the vehicle I reocmmend going with the most efficient cooler that will fit in the engine compartment. The most efficient design is the stacked plate type of coolers such as # D13403. This cooler measures 13 inches across, 7-5/16 inches tall, and 2 inches front to back. Make sure you have this much space to mount the cooler.

There are not specialty tools that you will need to perform the installation. Basic hand tools should be all that you need. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation. Please note that it is not always necessary to remove the front clip on the vehicle to perform the installation. We do that primarily because it is easier to see when we make the videos.

You will also want to get hose fitting # D13025 to avoid having to cut and flare lines. If you did not use these fitting you would have to get a flare tool to flare out a steel line. I have also included a link to our informational article on transmission coolers for you to view.
