Hitch Recommendation for 2003 Honda Accord EX 4-Door Sedan for Use with Out-Sider ASL-250 Lift
Question:
Im looking to install an Out-Sider Model ASL-250 platform lift on a 2003 Honda Accord EX 4-dr sedan with 4-cylinder engine. The specs on the lift call for a Class II or Class III hitch. Between the lift itself with swing-away arm and the power wheelchair, the total weight on the hitch will be about 350 lbs. Looking for recommendations on Class II versus Class III and particular models that would fit this car. Thanks!

All of the hitch receivers offered for your 2003 Honda Accord are the 1-1/4-inch size and rated as Class I hitches. Class I hitches are considered suitable for light-duty use, such as with 2-bike racks, small cargo baskets and for light towing applications.
The 142-lb Out-Sider ASL-250 Platform Lift is intended for use with 2-inch Class II or Class III receivers and so is not compatible with the 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches available for your Accord. You cannot use a hitch adapter in your application as it would reduce your hitch's capacity by 50-percent.
The limiting factor here is really the vehicle itself. If the Accord frame were strong enough to support the capabilities of a heavy-duty Class II or Class III hitch then such items would be offered. This particular vehicle simply cannot handle the type of tongue weight load you are asking of it (approximately 350-lbs).
An option to allow transporting a powered wheelchair with your Accord is a small trailer that will not impose an excessive tongue weight load on the hitch. Local home and farm stores often have small utility trailers that might suit your needs. For trailer wiring use part # 118302 and for a hitch use part # 24787 which includes a pin-and-clip. Just add a ball mount # 3592 and hitch ball that matches the coupler on the trailer, such as 1-7/8-inch ball # 19256 or 2-inch ball # 19258.
