Recommended Brake Controller For An Itasca Ellipse Class A Motorhome
Question:
I have an Itasca Ellipse motorhome and will be towing a 8.5x20 cargo trailer. What brake controller do you recommend? Will I need to run wiring to the back of the vehicle? Thanks

I have two recommendations depending on if you plan to flat tow with your motorhome. If you do then I recommend getting the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System # HM39530 as it comes with a brake controller that will allow you to flat tow a vehicle or tow a trailer all in one package.
If you plan on only towing trailers with your motorhome then I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness # RED52VR. This brake controller has such a small footprint that it makes it super easy to install and doesn't get in the way like a normal bulky brake controller would.
It comes with a universal wiring harness that will need to be wired in the following manner:
White: Ground
Blue: Brake signal wire that runs to the 7-way and then to the brakes on the trailer
Black: 12v power from battery with in-line fuse # 331-CBK30-EB
Red: Cold side of the brake light switch (wire that only receives power when the brakes are depressed)
This control knob also has different dash mounts that you can get to make the controller look as factory as possible:
# RED48FR
# 331-TPSI-003
# 331-TPSI-007
# 331-TPSI-002
# 331-TPSI-001
If you do not have a 7-way on the back of your motorhome you will need to install the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 first. Since you're installing it on a motorhome you'll need some additional 10AWG wire # 10-2-1 to run the brake controller wire (blue) and the 12v power wire to the battery. I would figure the length of the motorhome plus an additional 5 feet for any routing that you may need to do.
If you have any other questions or need more help with the installation please let me know.
