Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring That Is Going Bad On A G3 Eagle

Question:

Im pretty good with wiring issues, but this one has me stumped. I bought a nice used G3 Eagle. The third trip out I went early morning. I took it out very early where I could see what was happening since it was still dark. When I hit the brakes in the driveway the running lights on the trailer came on. By the time I got to the ramp and hit the brakes the correct lights lit up on the trailer. The following morning I left home and everything seemed to be fine. Halfway to the lake all lights went out on the trailer, AND my brake lights on my truck stopped working, creating a very dangerous situation. I made it to the ramp and unplugged the trailer lights fearing they could short out my trucks electrical system. I can understand a weak ground or something similar, but this seems more like possible broken wires inside the curly-cue wiring. Any thoughts and/or help would be appreciated. My first thought was to just cut all wiring about 1 foot outside the front end of the trailer and run new wiring from there including a new plug.

It sounds like the wiring could be damaged on your G3 Eagle. I would recommend using A Hook Probe Circuit Tester Kit # PTW2993 which will test the trailer connector on the bumper of your truck. Activate the turn signals and check the appropriate pins for a signal. Have a helper step on the brake pedal and test for a signal on the pins. If they do not show a signal for the functions you could have a blown fuse.

If you do get signals at the connector when the signals and brakes are activated, then the problem exists on your trailer. You will have to closely examine the wiring from the connector back, looking for broken or frayed wires and loose or corroded connections.

If you have a damaged wiring set up The Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector # HS381-9000 will help make the installation easier.
