Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Behind a Motor Home with Stowmaster Tow Bar

Question:

Hello, I just purchased RM-222 from etrailer.com, removed front bumper off my 2007 raised 4-dr Jeep Wrangler, I,d like to drill two 1/2inch holes on each frame-end-plates as shown in the picture and bolt brackets directly into them. Is this area firm enough and safe to attach my StowMaster 5000 tow bar, and tow my jeep across the US?

In order to flat tow the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited you will need base plates that attach to the vehicle frame. Because the bumper structure is attached to the frame and not part of the frame, you do not want to attach tow bar parts to it to flat tow the vehicle because there is a possible point of failure between the bumper and frame.

For some base plates, you have options, see link to right. I like the XL style base plates, # 1429-1, because they have fewer restrictions that the MX and Blue Ox base plates. These base plates are compatible with the Stowmaster tow bar. Since your Jeep is lifted you may need a high-low adapter to tow it level. I have linked the adapter options for you to the right.

For 6k safety cables use # RM-643. The coiled design will help keep the cables off of the ground.

For lighting, I recommend a simple solution; the bulb and socket kit # RM-155. Using this kit means you will not have to cut into the vehicle wiring for installation. There is drilling required to mount the bulbs inside the tail light housing. In my research I have found that you may need to disconnect the battery and pull a fuse to flat tow the vehicle. Consult your owners manual to confirm.

Finally, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest systems to use is the Even Brake proportional braking system, # RM-9400. It applies the Jeep brakes in proportion to how much the motor home is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

I have included some helpful links to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you.
