Comparing Thule Cargo Control Options Surf Strap # TH531 and Load Straps with Cam Buckles # TH521
Question:
Is this strap long enough to accomodate tieing down an object such as a Christmas tree or is it solely meant for boards?

The Thule Express Surf Strap, part # TH531, is specialized for use in securing a surf board on Thule or other roof rack crossbars and works best when used in conjunction with one of their crossbar pads, such as part # TH802 intended for round and square bars. The pads help stabilize and protect your surf board or other cargo from scratches.
The Thule 9-foot Load Straps, part # TH521, feature polypropylene straps and padded cam-action buckles but require you to thread the strap through the buckle to tighten.
Although you could use either of these as a multi-purpose tie down we do offer other cargo control options that might be more versatile as a general purpose tie down product. The link provided will take you to our main page for cargo control products, which include a variety of types from nets to ratcheting straps with hooks.
For example, Erickson offers their set of two 10-foot Push-Button Retractable Ratchet Straps, part # EM34415, which include vinyl-coated S-hooks. These have a safe working load limit (WLL) of 400-lbs and at the push of a button retract fully which makes them very convenient to use and store. Erickson also offers a 4-piece set, part # EM31352, which also offers ratcheting operation but without the push-button retraction feature. These straps are also 10-feet in length and have a working load limit of 500-lbs each.
For instances when you cargo deserves protection we suggest protector sleeves from Erickson, part # EM06305-2, which slip over the straps to safeguard your cargo from abrasion.
