Can a Transom Tie Down Be Mounted To The Bunk Boards On A Boat Trailer?

Question:

I saw a Shorelander trailer with a bracket like this attached to the bottom side of a bunk as the transom tie down. I have a 14foot jon boat with a 50hp 2 stroke. Wil a bracket like this attached to a bunk provide sufficient support? What is the max recommend distance from the bunk support on the frame to the end of the bunk where this bracket would attach?

Expert Reply:

The CE Smith Tie-Down Bracket # CE26214G really should not be attached to the end of the bunk board. The end of the board will rot over time as it is constantly being submerged in water for loading and unloading the boat. The bracket should be attached to the crossmember or the trailer frame.

You will then be able to secure your boat to the trailer using the Transom Tie-Down Straps # IMF14207.
