Thule Tire Chain Comparison for a 2013 Subaru Outback

Question:

I am searching for chains on a 2013 Subaru Outback tire size P225/60R17. I am considering the Thule CG9 or CB12 series. Subaru cautions to not use chains because of lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body and recommends use of other traction devices such as spring chains. However, they also indicate that any traction device used must be SAE class S device, and used on the front wheels only. Does the CG9 and CB12 meet the class S requirements? If so, can they be used on my Outback? Also, what are the design differences between the CG9 and CB12 chains? Thanks

The Thule CG9 Tire Chains, # TH2004205104, and the CB12 Chains, # TH01221104, are both Class S compatible tire chains and will fit the P225/60R17 tires on your 2013 Subaru Outback. The main difference between the CG9 and CB12 chains is that the CB12 tire chains are manual tensioning chains and the CG9 chains are have automatic tensioning. The CB12 chains are also rated for off-road and on-road use. The CG9 chains are for on-road use only.

I would go with the CG9 chains. The automatic tensioning saves a lot of time and hassle, especially if you are installing the chains on the side of the road.

I have attached installation videos for both of these tire chains on a 2011 Subaru Outback for you to check out. I have also attached two FAQ articles on tire chains for you.
