Trailer hitch, Ball Mount, Ball, and Wiring for a 2006 Subaru Legacy Sedan

Question:

I own a 2006 Subaru Legacy Sedan and am planning on installing a hitch on it to tow a small trailer. I just want to make sure that I am getting: a the right products b all of the parts necessary Below is the hitch that I am looking at: Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for the 2006 Subaru Legacy Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Code: 36334 In the installation instructions, it mentioned that an optional bar for sedan only can be purchased separately. What is that for and do I need it? I also was going to purchase the recommended wiring kit, drawbar, and a ball based on the trailer size I get. Is there anything else I would need to complete the installation?

First, lets look at the trailer hitches for your 2006 Subaru Legacy sedan. There are both Class II and Class III trailer hitches available. Any time there are different Class hitches available for a vehicle I always recommend going with the higher Class. This is because the higher Class hitches have a higher capacity and have more accessory options.

With a Class II hitch you are going to also be limited to using one specific ball mount so that makes it harder to choose the proper ball mount to tow the trailer level. Class III trailer hitches also have a 2 inch receiver which is stronger and compatible with more accessories like I mentioned above.

If you are interested in a Class III trailer hitch the most popular option is # 75560. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation. The installation video is on a wagon but will be similar on a sedan. I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK4. It comes with a ball mount, interchangeable ball set, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

No matter which hitch you choose, the wiring will be the same. The most popular option is # C59236. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

If you do decide on a Class II hitch, then Draw-Tite hitch # 36334 would be a good choice. That additional bar it mentions in the instructions is referring to the specific ball mount you must use on the sedan. It is # 36071 and it includes a hitch pin and clip. It must be used in the rise position (as shown in the instructions). For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch use # 19258. The ball size you need should be on the trailer coupler.

Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for its towing capacities and if lower than the hitch you will always go by the lower rating. I have included some links to helpful FAQ articles on hitches and towing for you.
