Recommendations for Tow Package for 2008 Ford Escape

Question:

Hi, Im trying to figure out the correct wiring harness for my 2008 Ford Escape XLT V6. Called the dealer, and they said it did not come with a tow package. As I understand a tow package on these models consist of the hitch, trans cooler, and relay fuses. Here my complete list of questions: 1. Looked in the fuse box under the hood and it appeared that there are relays in the 31c, 31d, and 31e positions with 5L3T-AA relays. Does this mean that the connector in the back will be live and determine the correct wiring harness? 2. I heard that there is a trans cooler that is standard on the V6 that is a combo that is the trans cooler and ac condenser? If that us true,do I need a external trans cooler? Thanks for your time,

A factory tow package can vary with different manufacturers. Based on the information you provided we would need to start by testing the connector you mentioned in the back. You will need a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. You indicated that there are fuses in the 31C, 31D, and 31E positions on your fuse panel. You might check your owner's manual and verify that these are fuses for the left turn, right turn, and park / running lights.

You will need to have someone sit in the front of the vehicle and run through the functions. If the tester shows that you do have these working, I recommend a harness like Draw-Tite Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # 118251. I have linked you to a video showing installation of this harness. I have also attached the installation instructions PDF file.

If you find the connector does not have current, I would recommend Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # 118551, for your Ford Escape. I have linked you to an installation video for this harness, and have attached the installation instructions for this wiring harness.

Transmission coolers are installed on all vehicles with automatic transmissions, but may just do an adequate job. Depending on what you are planning on carrying, or hauling with your Escape, it certainly would never hurt to install an additional transmission cooler. Before you choose a transmission cooler, you will need to decide the size of the cooler you wish to purchase. The coolers come in different class sizes, so choosing a cooler that will be the most efficient for their use is important.

The next thing you need to consider is where you are going to mount the cooler. You need to make sure you have the clearance required. I have linked you to a couple of FAQ articles about Transmission Coolers.

I would recommend Derale Transmission Cooler Class lll, part # D13503. This cooler measures 11 inches wide by 8-3/4 inches tall and is 7/8 inch deep, and includes the complete mounting kit for your Escape. I have linked you to the installation video for the D13503.

If you do not have a hitch installed, we have several options to consider. I would recommend etrailer Trailer Hitch Class III Receiver, part # e56AR. This hitch has a 2-inch receiver, has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity, and features easy bolt on installation. I have linked you to the installation video for this hitch.

The hitch ball mount is sold separately. I would recommend our etrailer Ball Mount kit, part # 989900. This kit comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 hitch balls, the pin and clip, and a bag that holds these kit items.
