Using the Class II Swagman XC2 Bike Rack for 2 bikes on a Honda Fit With Class I Hitch

Question:

I was looking at buying the swagman xc2 platform rack Item # S64650 for my honda fit 2020. However, all the hitches for the Fit are Class 1 hitches and the swagman xc2 are Class 2 racks. But the installation video and reviews on the etrailer product page show it being on a Honda Fit. So are class 2 racks like the swagman xc2 platform actually compatible on Class 1 hitches?

The Swagman XC2 Bike Rack for 2 bikes, # S64650 is for a 1-1/4" hitch and rated for Class II but will fit a Class I hitch as long as it does not have the stopper/weld bead in the receiver. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C11406 for the 2020 Honda Fit does not have this weld stop and has a tongue weight rating for up to 200 lbs. The Swagman XC2 Bike Rack for 2 bikes, # S64650 is rated for use with two bikes up to 35 lbs. each and the bike rack itself weighs about 25 lbs. (less than 100 lbs. total.) So if you abide by the max weight rating of the bike rack, you will not exceed the max weight rating of the hitch (200 lbs.).

Class I and Class II trailer hitches both typically have a 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver opening. The max tongue weight rating of a Class I hitch is typically 100-200 lbs. with the Class II being 200 lbs. to possibly over 400 lbs. Many hitch accessories are designed to maximize the weight carrying capabilities of the trailer hitches they're used with. To keep you from overloading your Class I hitch with a Class II hitch accessory, some manufacturers place a stopper in the back of Class I hitch receivers. This prevents you from being able to use certain drawbars and accessories because the shanks can only slide into the trailer hitch opening up to that point. On hitch accessories designed for Class II trailer hitches, the shank that slides into the hitch opening is longer. When this longer shank slides into a Class I hitch, it will hit the stopper, preventing the pin hole on the hitch from lining up with the pin hole on the accessory.
