Components Needed to Build a Trailer From Scratch with the Timbren Axle-Less System
Question:
Hello! I want to build my own trailer using the Timbren Axle-Less system. I drive a Subaru WRX outfitted with the class 3 hidden hitch that I bought from you! Since my car is so weak I am looking to cut weight anywhere I can. I have found an excellent option in the Timbren Axle-Less system however I am not sure what I will all need as far as hardware to build my trailer. For example say I have the rectangular frame built already. What parts will I all need? In my research I have found I should be looking for these pieces: - Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System : # ASR1200S04 - Break Assembly : # 23-48 - Break Controller : # TK90160 - Break Instillation Kit : # ETBC7 However I am not sure if I am missing anything or if these parts are even compatible with one another. I look forward to discussing the answer. Thank you!

I would be happy to help you put together the components you need to build your own trailer and do my best to keep the weight down. You are off to a good start with the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/Brake Flange item # ASR1200S04. These weigh around 50 lbs. However, the brakes you linked item # 23-48 are for 7" hubs and we do not have any that will fit the Timbren systems so you will need to go up to 10" hubs and drums.
I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 item # 84546UC3. These are sold individually and weigh 20 lbs apiece.
For your brake assemblies I recommend the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 10" - Right Hand item # 23-27 and Left Hand item # 23-26. These weigh right at 10 lbs apiece.
You are going to need a set of wheels and tires for your trailer. I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Wheel item # AM31990. The 13" diameter x 4-1/2" wide steel trailer wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. The tire is a radial tire with a ply rating of 8, load range D, maximum speed of 81 mph, and a 1,650-lb maximum load at 70 psi. This tire has a 1-year worry-free guarantee. If within the first 12 months the tire is damaged in any way, it will be replaced at no charge. Each tire weighs just over 31 lbs apiece.
For tail lights I recommend item # STL78RB. These are LED waterproof lights and have the stop, turn, and tail light functions. This light measures 7-9/16 inches long x 3-5/16 inches wide x 3/4 inch deep. These weigh less than half a pound.
I also recommend side reflectors like part # RE10AB. These are amber in color and measure 3-3/16 inches long x 1-7/16 inches wide. I have also linked a faq about what type of lighting is required depending on the size of your trailer.
To control your brakes and trailer lights you are going to need a 7-way connector and a junction box. I recommend the Trailer Wiring Junction Box - 7 Color Coded Terminals - ABS item # 3375601101 and the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable - Trailer End - 8' Long - RV Standard item # H20046. This electrical box lets you consolidate your trailer's wiring into one safe and secure place. Combined these components weigh about 3 lbs.
For wiring up your brakes I recommend using Deka Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge, Brake Wire item # 10-2-1. This wire is sold by the foot.
The Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller item # TK90160 you referenced would be perfect for your application. The brake controller activates your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. It automatically adjusts the trailer's braking based on deceleration of your vehicle. The brakes activate immediately, there is no pausing like with time-delayed brake controllers.
The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires item # ETBC7 includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.
