Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring Harness For Towing a Boat Trailer With a 2021 Explorer
Question:
I just traded in my truck for a 2021 Ford Explorer. Due to availability they did not have one with a tow package so I need you to tell me what I need to be able to tow my boat and trailer. It has surge brakes so I don't need a brake controller or 7-way.

I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e29YR for your 2021 Ford Explorer. This receiver will require no drilling into your frame as it uses factory holes for mounting to your frame. It does require fascia trimming. It has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 600lbs and maximum trailer capacity of 6,000lbs. Be sure to not exceed any weight ratings given by Ford for your Explorer, you can get these from your owner's manual.
The Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118599 will give you a 4-way flat connector for controlling the lighting on your boat trailer. This connects in line of your tail lights so that there is no splicing necessary on your factory harness for attaching this connector.
If your surge brake has an electric reverse lockout on your boat trailer, you will need the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter # C57187. This adapter will allow for you to splice into your reverse light circuit and still be able to use the reverse lockout when you back up with your boat trailer.
