Popping Sound and No Lid Lift On MaxxFan Roof Vent

Question:

I inherited the camper van with a Maxxair fan installed . I think, based on descriptions, that it is the Plus model remote included but I cannot locate a serial number anywhere on the unit even when I took the faceplate off. After my last renters returned, when I clicked on the on button on the remote, there was a popping sound and the lid would not open. I am able to manually open the cover 1/4 of the way before the pop happens and the lid falls down. From everything I have read this seems to mean I need a new operating mechanism. My questions are: 1 How can I find the right model to order when I cannot find my serial or model number on my fan? 2 Is it correct to rotate the black handle to manually open the lid? I have read different info on whether it is OK to open manually you can hear the motor turning when you do it manually? I have reached out 2x to Maxxair and have not had a response yet. Thanks for any help you can provide!

The serial number should be located on the base of the unit under the screen. I would need this to confirm parts but it's likely the correct one for you is the Replacement Operator Mechanism for MaxxAir MaxxFan Plus or MaxxFan Deluxe Roof Vents part # MA10-20281K-1AF.

The manual override handle won't hurt the unit, it is deigned so that you can still open the lid when there is a failure like you have.
