Can Weight Distribution be Used with a Class II Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Subaru Forester

Question:

My Subaru Forester is equipped with a class 2 hitch. I tow a 1300lb pop-up trailer wich is well below my car towing capacity 2500lb but the tongue weight is at the car limit 200lb. Can I add a weight distribution system to my class 2 hitch ? Wich model should I use ?

I do have a solution for you but first weight distribution cannot be used with a Class II trailer hitch. Class II trailer hitches are not built for or tested for use with weight distribution so manufacturers do not make any systems that will fit a Class II trailer hitch.

I have a couple of recommendations that might work for you. First, if you can lower the trailer's gross weight, that will lower the tongue weight. Or if you can move any weight on the trailer further back, that will also lower the tongue weight. But on a pop-up camper, removing or moving weight may not be a possibility.

What you can do is replace the Class II hitch with a Class III trailer hitch, like # 75650, for your 2010 Subaru Forester. This hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 600 pounds so the 200 pound tongue weight of your trailer will not be an issue. But be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual to determine the vehicles tongue weight capacity. If lower, you must go by the lower rating. I have included links to the instructions and a video showing a typical installation of this hitch for you.

I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin and clip, and a storage bag.
