Kayak Carrier For Large Kayak on Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer

Question:

I see the Malone bunk kit on your site. Is that the best option for a 12’ 9” kayak on an Malone EcoLight trailer or would you suggest another solution? Since the crossbars are 38” apart they are too close for cradles and v-carriers to have the proper spacing which is why I’m interested in bunks. Thanks!

While the Bunk Kit for Malone Trailers # MPG561 will certainly work for your large kayak, there are better options to carry it with the Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer # MAL53FR.

I recommend going with a more traditional kayak carrier for ease of use with their included tie-downs integrated into the carrier itself, rather than having to rig up tie-downs for a bunk kit, which is generally for slightly larger boats. I verified with Malone that there are two kayak racks that will fit the crossbars and spacing of the EcoLight Trailer # MAL53FR, and both are wing-style carriers. You can choose the one you need based on the weight of your kayak, as they have different capacities:

- 75 lb Capacity: Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs # MPG107MD

- 150 lb Capacity: Malone MegaWing Fishing Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs # MPG207

Both are rear-loading carriers so you can easily load up your kayak and are going to be the easiest option for transporting it with the EcoLight Trailer # MAL53FR.
