Recommendations for Upgrading Trailer Tires for Better Highway Use
Question:
I need 4.80-12 5 lug trailer tires with rims. Do you recommend these, considering I drive with a trailer 300 miles a week at 70mph? If not, what do you recommend?

Expert Reply:
The 4.80-12 tires, like # AM30660, are generally only rated to 65 miles per hour, so may not be the best option for you. That being said, if you have the room, the Kenda Karrier # AM31985 will be a better option.
This will have an outer diameter of 24 inches, so you will need to measure to make sure you will have at least 3 inches from the bottom of the fender to the top of the tire. However, these are also rated up to 1,650 pounds at 70 psi and have an M speed rating, which means they are rated up to 81 miles per hour. The radial tire is also ideal for highway driving and will have a longer life than a bias ply tire.
You may be able to use an over under kit, like # K71-384-00, to get you more space as well. If you do not already have one installed of course. It should be note that this will fit a 2 3/8 inch axles as well.
