What All is Needed to Add Brakes to an Axle?

Question:

I own a 2004 Rockwell Freedom pop-up that I am wanting to add electric brakes. There are no brake flanges unfortunately on the trailer. I have a welding shop willing to mount them if I can just find the right ones. I haven’t been able to find any markings on the axle. The information I have is: VIN #4X4CF2194D257725 GVWR 2,275 lbs Diameter of the axle 2 1/2 inches Any information you have on all the parts I will be needing would be greatly appreciated.

We can definitely get you all the needed parts to add brakes to your pop-up camper.

The Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35 will fit a 2 3/8 inch axle, which is a little different than the 2 1/2 inch one you mentioned, but this will be the standard for a 3,500 pound axle. If you are indeed at 2 1/2 inches in diameter, the hole may need to be widened out a little bit to fit properly.

The brakes that will attach to this flange will be the etrailer.com Self-Adjusting # AKEBRK-35-SA. This will be a right and left brake, so you will only need one set per axle. The Self-Adjusting feature also means you will only need to adjust these when they are first installed and then they handle everything afterwards.

The drums I suggested are the etrailer.com # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. These have a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern and come pre-greased, but it is always a good idea to double check your bearings. This will use an inner bearing # L68149 (1.378 inner diameter) and an outer bearing # L44649 (1.063 inner diameter). This can also be verified by contacting the manufacturer of the trailer with your VIN. They usually keep all this info on file for situations like this.
