How Does Brake Controller Install in 2021 Ford Ranger with 7-Way

Question:

Hello. I have a 2018 Ford Explorer Limited. Currently, my trailer brake controller is a Hopkins Insight 47297. I am in the process of getting a new vehicle, which is a 2021 Ford Ranger. Will the Hopkins Insight brake controller work for me with this new vehicle? This truck, like the Explorer before it, is equipped with AEB and Adaptive Cruise Control, if that matters. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Yes you can install the Hopkins Insight brake controller in your 2021 Ford Ranger and actually you don't need anything else to do so. Your Ranger doesn't have a connector for brake controller wiring and instead has 4 blunt cut wires that are sticking out of the large wire harness that goes through the driver's side firewall, left of the brake pedal, with shrink tubing on the ends.

@Jonathang I am sure there is a way to install the Hopkins Insight in your Ranger but since you're from Australia and since we didn't have a 12 Ranger here in the US I don't have a way to recommend for it to happen.

Hi Adam, I have the 2018 Ford Ranger and cant see the three blunt cut wires under the dash for the brake controller installation. Is this only on 2019 Ranger models and newer? Also, I have a 7pin trailer plug installed on the tow bar and am wondering if the trailer wiring module (under the passenger seat) will allow me to slice into existing wiring to wire my Tekonsha P3 controller. Im just trying to avoid running extra wiring all the way to the rear of the Ranger if I can. Cheers, Jonathan

@JonathanG Are you sure you have a 2018 Ranger? That model wasn't available in the US in that year.

@Jonathang That makes sense. We don't have access to Australian model info as well as we do to US models. I would assume it's got to be the same but we don't have a way to verify this.
