Determining Correct Weight Distribution System For 1-Horse Trailer With Short Tongue

Question:

Can you please advise what weight distribution hitch would work for a short tongue trailer? Dry weight 3000 lbs, 500 lb tongue weight. This is a one horse trailer. Will be putting my own living quarters conversion in the front. Max tongue weight capacity with weight distribution is 1100 lbs. per hitcher receiver sticker on my f150.

I would be happy to help you find the correct weight distribution hitch for your short tongue horse trailer, but you will need to verify your total tongue weight to confirm the correct system.

Total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to trailer, plus the weight of any cargo added behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.

The easiest way to determine your trailers tongue weight is by using a tongue weight scale like the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044 when your trailer is fully loaded. You will then just need to add the weight of any cargo you plan on adding behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.

If your total tongue weight ends up being over 800lbs you will need to step up to the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 10K GTW - 1K TW # C17322 which works with total tongue weights between 800-1000lbs. This hitch includes a 2-5/16" hitch ball, so if your trailer coupler requires a 2" hitch ball you will need to purchase the 2" hitch ball # A-90 separately.

If you find your tongue weight is lower just let me know.

I included a few video reviews and a link to a helpful article on trailer tongue weight for you to take a look at.
