Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2020 Honda CR-V

Question:

Trying to determing if Id ever need a 5pin wiring harness for trailers I can actually tow with 2020 Honda CRV. Have only ever towed larger trailers 10,000 lbs, so a bit unfamiliar with what small trailers require. Would be looking to tow moving trailer U-haul, kayak/canoe trailer or possibly small travel trailer.

We can definitely help you find what you need. Typically the wiring harness you need will depend on the trailer and whether or not it has brakes. In most cases the small trailers you've mentioned will have 4 pin trailer connectors and typically only 5 pin connectors are found on boat trailers with electric lockouts; it's possible that the travel trailer will have a 7 way.

For your 2020 Honda CR-V I recommend starting with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118741 because we've found that Tekonsha wiring harnesses tend to have the most reliable converters. This will cover most of the trailers you'll be hauling.

If you're going to be hauling a trailer with brakes then the # ETBC7 (wired brake controllers) or # ETBC7L (wireless brake controller) would need to be installed with the # 118741 to provide you with the connectors needed for that. This setup would provide you with a working 4 way and 7 way trailer connector and then you'd just need to add a brake controller for when you're towing trailers with brakes.

An easy to use and install brake controller that I highly recommend for use with the 2020 Honda CR-V is the Curt Echo # C51180, which plugs into the 7 way on the vehicle and then you'll plug the trailer's 7 way into that. The Echo is a wireless brake controller that is controlled by a smart phone with Android 4.4 or newer, or iOS 8.0 or newer, so there are not wires to connect in the cabin of the vehicle; since your 2020 CR-V did not come with any of the brake controller connections in the cabin this is the easiest solution to use and install.

I've linked some review videos of these parts for you to check out, as well as some of our FAQ articles on wiring trailer connectors that you can use as a guide.
