Cargo Carrier with Spare Tire Clearance for 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
Question:
Will the Car Pod fit on my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon? I am afraid that the Spare tire will be in the way.... Any options here to make this work and be durable/safe? Great product and I need more space to put luggage, etc. Thanks for offering this forum for advice :

As a first step, you will need to determine what kind of clearance you will need. Measure from the hitch pin hole rearward until you clear the furthest rearward portion of the spare tire. The cargo carrier you choose will need to have a shank that is longer than that dimension. The FAQ article I've linked for you shows how to take that measurement.
If your Wrangler has the stock tire size, this distance will be around 6 inches, but if you have larger tires, this distance could be greater. The Carpod # M2200 has a hitch pin hole to closest portion of the basket measurement of 4 inches, and would unfortunately not clear the spare tire of your Wrangler.
The Pro Series 24x60 Cargo Carrier, part # 63153 has 12-3/4 inches of clearance between the hitch pin hole and the closest portion of the carrier basket, which should be plenty of clearance unless you have an enormous spare tire. A 20 cubic foot capacity cargo bag, part # 988501 is also available.
The Surco Spare Tire Mounted Cargo Carrier, part # SPSJ4319, although it is a smaller carrier, would be an innovative solution with no worries about clearance, but it is limited to a 100 lb capacity.
I have linked you to an FAQ article that shows how to measure for the spare tire clearance. The article describes measuring for a bike rack, but the procedure would be the same.

I was looking at ing a Reese 14 hitch extender to mount the Carpod carrier basket model to the 2 receiver on my Jeep Wrangler. I do have a 12.5 wide spare and need the distance and my wife likes the road safety of the Carpod basket rather than a lower sidewall carrier. Would the extension work?
