Brake controller installation requires the following items: a brake controller, a 7-Way or 6-Way installation kit, either part # ETBC7 or # ETBC6 (depending on which connector is on your trailer) and a flat 4-pole trailer connector if one is not already installed at the rear of your Montero. The 4-pole trailer connectors are vehicle specific; the part for your Montero is # C55380. I have included links to all of these parts.
Installation of a brake controller is described in the three attached help articles. One provides useful general information about brake controllers, one covers all the details of installation, including parts needed and how to proceed, and the third explains use and wiring of the install kit (which is needed if your Montero is not already equipped with a factory 7-way or factory 6-way trailer connector).
I have also included a video demonstrating the installation of this brake controller (in a different vehicle) that will give you a good overview of the process, as well as a video showing installation of the custom wiring harness. I suggest you review all of the videos and articles first to familiarize yourself with the process and parts needed. These helpful tools will go a long way toward making the process as straightforward as possible and will enable you to know what parts to order for your particular installation.
