A trailer hitch mount cargo carrier would be a good choice to carry your 185 pound generator. You will need one that fits the trailer hitch on the vehicle and that has the size and capacity to hold the generator.
The Curt carrier , # C18152, is designed to fit 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. It has a capacity of 500 pounds so it can easily handle the generator. The usable space is 23-7/8 inches by 60-1/6 inches so you will want to compare that to the dimensions of the generator.
To secure the generator to the carrier I would go with some ratchet straps like # 34413.
