Removing Rear Bumper Fascia from a 2012 BMW X5 For Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installation

Question:

I have followed the instructions on removing the rear bumper fascia, but it will not come off. My sense is that there are some new attach points in the 2012 model that are not identified. Can you help?

You are correct, I checked the instructions and the revision currently provided with the hitch, part # 75600, were done in 2008. I spoke with my technical contact at Draw-Tite and he said that his engineering department now has some directions photos that show additional steps that may be required for 2011 and newer BMW X5 vehicles. I will list them out for you and I have added photos that my contact sent for you to see.

1) Remove the first 3 rivets from the rear fender flare, and pop off the flare on both sides. Remove the 8mm bolt hidden under the fender.

2) Remove the rear reflector lights underneath the taillights and remove the 8mm bolt.

3) From underneath remove six 8mm bolts located along the bumper.

4) Open your bottom tailgate at a 45 degree angle and notice the tabs. Pull apart the tabs by squeezing the tab and lift out.

5) From the side of the vehicle, grab the bumper fascia and pull towards you. Do this to both sides. Make sure not to warp the bumper while pulling, distribute force evenly.

6) From the rear of the vehicle pull on the corner adjacent the taillights until you hear it pop free, do not yank on the fascia.

7) From the rear center pull bumper fascia until it slides off.
