The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 has an auto shut-off mechanism that will activate after fifteen minutes of inactivity. That said, if you were to lock/un-lock the vehicle or open the door that would then trigger the brake controller to wake up. Therefore, you need to simply peek though your window without disturbing the vehicle in order to accurately check if the auto shut-off mechanism is working. I will say that this concern comes up quite often and it is almost always because people open the door on the vehicle to check rather than peeking through the window, therefore the brake controller wakes back up which then leads one to believe it never in fact shut off which is not the case.

If for some odd reason the brake controller still does not shut off even after fifteen minutes of inactivity and with no vehicle disturbances then it will need to be replaced but this is very rare.
