2019 Ford F-450 Troubleshooting 12 Volt Power Circuit Not Active on 7-Way
Question:
My 2019 F450 will not energize the elec/hyd boat trailer brakes, it was working properly the last time I pulled the boat approx. 3 weeks ago. I checked fuse 27 and checks good, there is no relay in slot 37. What other fuse inserts might cause the brakes to not energize now? I checked the pin at the truck plug that should provide 12v for the electric brakes #2 adjacent to the gnd pin but has no volts either static or when I press on the brakes or manually energize the brake controller, I even ran the gain from min to max and no voltage. I see there is another 12v pin at the plug #4, is this the one that controls the brakes ? The trailer circuits test good as I was instructed to pull the brake away pin which cause the system to pressurize. Any fuses or plug pins I should look at please advise. All pins are clean and seating properly.

I attached a picture that has a pin out diagram of a 7-way so that we are on the same page when we talk about pins. So the pin in the 1:00 position is the 12 volt power circuit which is what provides power for the electric over hydraulic actuator to function. You need to have power here for the actuator to function. It sounds like this circuit is not active on your truck so that would indicate to me it's where your problem is. Have you tested the pin in the 1:00 position with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993?
One option you have would be to bypass the factory wiring and run your own 12 volt circuit straight to the battery. You would need 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 sold by the foot and a breaker like part # 9510. You would just run the wire from the 12 volt pin of the 7-way at the rear of the vehicle up to the positive post of the battery through the breaker. This would be a solution that will bypass trying to find why your current circuit isn't active.
If your truck has the Smart Tow package you may just have to do a couple extra steps to activate the circuit as this is a common issue for the new Ford trucks.
The Smart Tow feature will only send power to the 12 volt pin on the 7-way when 1) this power circuit is activated via the in-dash settings and 2) the vehicle is turned on, the transmission is placed in gear, and the brake pedal is applied.
