Air Suspension Enhancement or Weight Distribution System for 2012 Ram 2500 Towing 1,700 lb TW

Question:

Hi, the class v receiver I installed is rated for GTW of 2500 with a weight distro hitch, 2000 lbs without. The tongue weight of the trailer I bought is 1700 lbs. I am considering installing air bags. What do you recommend?

A heavy duty air bag setup for your 2012 Ram 2500 like the Firestone kit part # F2701 will do a great job reducing the sag of the tongue weight you mentioned. This is a higher rated setup than other options so it will do great with the heavier tongue weight you'll have.

For a compressor kit then the heavy duty part # F2097 will work great to make inflating the bags and maintaining them easier. The compressor will inflate faster than standard compressors and the gauge inside the vehicle will allow you to monitor and inflate them from inside the vehicle.

All that said you are under the weight capacity that requires a weight distribution system, but a WD system will be your best option to give you the best and safest towing experience. A WD system reduces sag when towing but since it does so by moving some of the trailer's tongue weight to the front axle of the truck you end up with better braking and handling which is why it's preferred.

For a system rated for the tongue weight you mentioned of 1,700 lbs we have the Blue Ox SwayPro part # BXW2000 which has a tongue weight range of 1,500-2,000 lbs and comes with a Class V 2-1/2 inch shank like you'd need. For a hitch ball to go along with this you'd then want the part # 63840.
