Testing Wires By Function To Replace Hard Wired 7-Way Plug On Chevy 2500
Question:
On my chev 2005 2500hd I have found no white wire at all ,I have 1big black ,red ,blue,yellow ,light green, dark green ,and brown what do I use for my ground??? I have gone clear to the cab and no white I am lost what to do can u please help thanks .

It sounds like you are trying to replace the 7-Way plug on your 2005 Chevy 2500hd with a hardwire option like part # 30717. It sounds like you have found the 7-wires but the ground wire is not always white. You would need to test each wire by function with a circuit tester like part # PTW2979 to figure out which wire does not carry a function. Have someone activate the turn signals, tail lights, manual override on the brake controller, 12V power and reverse while you test each wire. The wire that does not carry a function is the ground. If the wires have a plug attached to it then you can test the pins. I have attached the standard pin locations of the pins and a wiring article.
