When replacing the factory brake controller on a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 you will indeed need to run a 12 gauge wire part # 12-1-1 from the back of the brake controller to the trailer connector. That said, we don't have any specific instructions for this so you just need to use your best judgement. I will say however that there will be a grommet in the floor near your foot for the parking brake cable to pass through which may be a good place to use to bring the wire into the cab. If you will be using the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller part # 39510 then you will also need the Brake Control Plug-In Harness part # 20127 to complete your install.
If you don't want to worry about running a wire from the back of the brake controller to the trailer connector then you can use the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 which will replace the factory brake controller and you don't have to do any other wiring because it stops the factory brake controller signal from passing through.
