Using the Yakima BackSwing on a 2006 Dodge Sprinter RV Conversion with Softride Versa 2 Rack

Question:

Hi We have a 2006 Sprinter van RV conversion and an existing 2 bike rack Softride Versa. We are looking at adding a swing away adapter so we can open the vans back doors. Any suggestions as to which one may be our best bet? Thanks

The Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 is a great add-on for allowing your standard platform rack to transform into a swing away rack, however it is not compatible with 1-1/4" hitch shanks or shanks that allow for an adapter to go up to 2"; for that reason, it would not be an option for you to use with your Softride Versa unless you have the version that was specifically made for use with a 2" hitch receiver.

If you don't have the 2" version and you'd like to upgrade to a swing away platform rack, the Rocky Mount BackStage 2 # RKY10002 is a Swiss Army knife of sorts when it comes to capabilities; it folds up for easy storage, tilts back and swings away from the rear doors of your vehicle so you'll never have a problem getting into the back with your bike rack attached. It also is going to provide the platform for easily getting bikes on and off, and comes with both bike locks and a hitch lock for added security.

Another option you could go with is the SportRack Ridge # SR2415 . This is a more economical solution, but the company is owned by Thule, so you're getting a well crafted product. This rack provides swing away capabilities so you'll be able to open up the back doors of the van and this is a 4 bike rack, so you'll have plenty of room for your bikes as well as any guests. The main drawback to this rack is that it is a hanging rack, so any bikes with odd shaped frames (women's bikes, children's bikes, etc.) would require a frame adapter like # SR0500 ; it also won't provide for the easy on-off like a platform rack does. You may also want to consider adding the hitch and cable lock pack # A32022 for some added security.
