Reverse Light Options for a 1998 Salem 5th Wheel Trailer With No Existing Reverse Lights

Question:

Currently my fifth wheel has no back up lights only having the factory surface mounted brake/tail light assemblies 1998 Salem. When backing at night visibility behind the trailer is next to none. I am looking for a light source that would help increase my visibility when backing at night. Does the backup/reverse light on this model provide a substantial enough light source to provide visibility at night or is it more to just warn other drivers behind you that you are backing up.

The Bargman Surface Mount Tail Light With Backup and License Light, part # 30-92-109, uses an 1156 style 12 volt bulb like the back up lights on most older vehicles and will improve the lighting behind your trailer for visibility. If you are looking for the maximum lighting possible I would recommend the 6-1/2 inch Oval, LED Backup Light, Grommet Mount, part # BUL22CB.

You may need to run a wire for the reverse lights from your 7 way connector on your trailer if the trailer has not had reverse lights installed previously. You will want to use the center terminal inside of your 7 way connector for the reverse light wire and you can run the wire to the rear of the trailer along the frame. You will also want to make sure the connector on your vehicle is connected to the reverse light circuit.

The Bargman Surface Mount Tail Light with Backup Light will be the easiest replacement option because it can replace your existing tail light assembly on your fifth wheel trailer, but you will want to make sure you run the reverse light wire to the mounting location of the tail light assembly. The 6-1/2 inch Oval LED Backup Light will give you the maximum lighting behind your fifth wheel trailer. If you choose the LED backup light you will also need the Rubber Grommet, part # A70GB, the Straight 2-Wire Pigtail, part # A45CB and the Trailer Light Mounting Bracket, part # BK70BB.

You will want to find a secure mounting location like on top of the metal crossbar at the rear of the trailer and mount the bracket. You can then mount the light into the grommet and then into the bracket and connect the pigtail wires into the back of the LED light. Then you can ground the white wire to the trailer frame and connect the red wire to the reverse light wire you ran from your 7 way connector to the rear of the trailer. I have included a demonstration video for mounting the LED light into the bracket.
