Will Rear Hatch of 2012 Kia Sorento Open With a 24 X 60 Hitch Cargo Carrier Installed and Loaded
Question:
Hi- I am new to this so please bear with me. I have a 2012 Kia Sorento. I am having a 2 Draw-tite hitch installed.... I would like the 24 x 60 cargo carrier. I have a big dog who rides in the back of my vehicle. On longer trips, I have to stop every couple hours to let him out. Will I be able to open the back of my vehicle with the carrier on and loaded? Would I be able to safely carry the cargo carrier and, say - a couple hundred pounds of cargo if I added a hitch extender? What is the maximum amount I could extend out the shaft of the cargo carrier and still be assured that it would be secure? Thank you.

A Class III 2-inch hitch like the Draw-Tite, part # 75684 for your 2012 Kia Sorento will have a towing weight capacity of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs. The tongue weight capacity is the amount of weight that can exerted down on the hitch receiver opening. It is usually 10 percent of the gross towing weight capacity of the hitch.
If you use a hitch extender, it will decrease the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent, since it will be moving the load further away from the vehicle. If your hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs the hitch extender will reduce that capacity to 175 lbs. You will also need to subtract the weight of the hitch cargo carrier to get the weight you will be able to haul on the cargo carrier. The average weight of a 24 x 60 cargo carrier is 60 lbs. That will leave you with a maximum weight of 115 lbs you could haul on the cargo carrier.
I would recommend to use a cargo carrier that will have the longest measurement from the hitch pin hole to the nearest edge of the carrier. These measurements are listed on the product page of the carriers. This measurement will give you an idea of where the hitch cargo carrier will be located on your vehicle and if it might allow your rear hatch to open and clear the load on the cargo carrier. Because of all the variables involved it would be hard for me to determine if your rear hatch will open and clear the load you will have on the hitch cargo carrier.
Another thing to be aware of is the location of your exhaust pipe and to choose a cargo carrier that will not be close to the exhaust pipe.
I am including a link to a list of the 24 x 60 hitch cargo carriers for a 2-inch hitch.
