Dexter Never Adjust Brakes Initial Adjustment on Tandem Axle Trialer
Question:
I have installed Dexter Never adjust brakes on my double axle travel trailer. After following the recommended drive/braking sequences for initial adjustment, I still must have the gain at maximum setting to achieve a minimal braking effect. I understand how to do a manual adjustment, but can find NO INFORMATION which explains how to back off in the event they get too tight. I should state after assembling each brake/drum, I spun each wheel and had a helper apply the brakes, and they all worked, but this does not duplicate braking under a load. Any feedback will be welcome. Ideally, I would like to tighten them all equally, then back them off equally, and allow the self adjustment to take over from there.

The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K # 23-468-469 are not designed to be manually adjusted in the way you are describing. There isn't really a way to back off the adjustment because they are designed to automatically adjust as needed to maintain correct tension.
For adjustment, you should take the trailer to a safe level location where you can hit the electric brake controller hard a few times. To adjust the brakes, the initial adjustment using your brake controller is needed. You will speed up to 25 mph and hit the manual override on your controller only. You will do this a few times until you feel the braking appropriately. Then you can adjust your brake controller gain levels and boost based on the controller installation instructions to achieve the desired braking without the manual emergency override.
