Can I Increase the Tongue Weight Capacity of a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited

Question:

Will this increase my vehicles hitch weight rating? I have a 2018 wrangler JLU rubicon with the factory installed hitch. 3500 towing capacity but only 350 tongue weight. I would like to tow the 2019 airstream basecamp X which has a listed hitch weight of 435 pounds. If this doesnt work is there another product youd recommend? Or am I just out of luck for towing the basecamp? Thanks

I do have a possible solution for you but the most well equipped 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs therefore, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # DT78MR will not increase your tongue weight capacity. However, most of the time you can use a weight distribution system like the Reese Weight Distribution System w Shank part # RP66540 with the Chain Hangers for Reese Weight Distribution Systems part # RP58305 to increase your tongue weight capacity but you would need to look on the hitch itself to see what that capacity is.

Please note the hitch weight capacity you are seeing is most likely the dry weight therefore will be heavier when fully loaded. If you do decide to go the weight distribution route you will also need a hitch ball, part # A-90 or part # 19286.

I hava 2020 JL , 2 door Willy model Wrangler. It has factory fitted class 2 receiver with ratings of 3500 lbs, GVW : 5000 lbs and GCW: 8016 lbs. Can I still tow 3500 lbs ? Please be aware it’s a 2 door. Do I have to buy anti sway bar and electric brake to tow trailer ?

If your Jeep Wrangler lists a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds then you can tow a trailer of this weight - although you'll certainly be pushing its limits. I highly recommend verifying this info in your copy of the owner's manual. A weight distribution system with sway control will definitely help level everything out and provide smoother travel and I would think the trailer likely has electric brakes installed that you'll definitely want to utilize. Will the trailer weigh 3,500 pounds loaded or is this just an estimate?
