Is the Factory Transmission Cooler Good Enough for Towing
Question:
is the factory transmission cooler adquite for towing the max weight 3500 lbs

Expert Reply:
The factory transmission cooler on just about any vehicle is not really designed for towing applications. Since transmission fluid cannot be over-cooled, I do recommend adding a supplemental transmission cooler especially when towing.
Transmission coolers are not vehicle specific, but some vehicles may need a special fitting for installation. I would need to know the year, make, and model of the vehicle to determine if it needs anything special.
The most popular cooler is the Derale Series 8000, # D13502. The basic principal of installation is the same on every vehicle. Hot fluid flows from the transmission out to the factory cooler which is located inside the radiator on most vehicles. The fluid is cooled by air passing through the radiator.
The fluid normally would then flow back to the transmission. With a supplemental cooler installed, the fluid first goes through the factory cooler, then through the supplemental cooler, before returning to the transmission. I have included links to some FAQ articles on transmission coolers and some videos that show typical installations for you.
