How to Determine Clearance for Snow Chains on a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer with 215/40R17 Tires

Question:

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with 215/40R17 tires. Will I have clearance issues with these chains?

Expert Reply:

Since the tire size that you have, 215/40R17, is wider than any of the OEM tire sizes for your Lancer, you will need to measure to make sure there will be more than 9mm clearance between the tire side walls and tread and the vehicle fender well and suspension components, to use the Thule self-tensioning, low-profile snow tire chains, # TH2004205080.

If you determine that there is not at least 9mm of clearance for snow chains you may be able to use the K-Summit tire chains, # TH02230K12. These snow chains require 0 inches of clearance at the inner sidewall of the tire.

You should also confirm the snow chain compatibility for your vehicle with your owners manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for snow chain instructions.

I have added a link to an informational article on snow chains for you to review.
