Tire Chain Recommendation for 2010 GMC Sierra 2500 Plowing in Icy Conditions

Question:

I have a 2010 gmc 2500 plow truck with sander on back. Sometimes loaded sometimes not. I have 40 driveways which includes some road time between dirt driveways and some paved. The dirt driveways comes in all sizes in lengths up to 300yrds and can have up hill and down. In VT there is a lot of freezing under the snow. What do you recommend?

Expert Reply:

For icy conditions the best style of tire chains is the V-bar chains as the sharp corners of the V-bars actually break up the ice. The twist link style of chains you referenced are great for providing a smoother ride quality but they won't give you the absolute best traction in icy conditions.

I don't know what size tires you have but you'll want to follow the link I attached to this page where you can select your tire size and from there you'll want to select "Steel V-Bar" from the construction filters on the page to see all the options. The Pewag chains will last the longest but will cost a bit more, whereas the Glacier chains will still work great but are made from a softer metal so they won't last as long.
