Recommended Parts for Flat Towing a 2018 Ford Focus

Question:

Need to flat tow our 2018 Ford Focus and am looking for recommendations on towing equipment. Not sure of everything that I need but I know its more than a tow bar and base plates. Thank you.

To flat tow your 2018 Ford Focus you need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter for level towing.

I recommend using the Demco Base Plate Kit # DM9519324 and Commander II Non-Binding Tow Bar # DM9511012 because they provide you with a clean looking system that easily links up with one pin. The Commander tow bar also features integrated safety cables and a shank with a 1-1/2" rise/drop which may eliminate the need for a high-low adapter. To protect the tow bar I recommend using the Cover # DM9523042.

Then for wiring I highly recommend the Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 because it is very easy to set up (after the initial installation) and provides you with a connector for adding the Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 for charging you battery since it must be disconnected. Since this is the case I also recommend installing the Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766 so that you can quickly and safely disconnect and reconnect your battery.

For a supplemental braking system I recommend going with the SMI Air Force One # SM99243 if your motorhome has air brakes or the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 if it has hydraulic brakes. These permanently install on your Focus but are easy to switch over to "towing" mode after the initial installation. The proportional braking operation ensures smooth braking both from your motorhome and Ford Focus.

Most flat towing setups require a high-low adapter for the tow bar to remain level while towing. I have linked our selection of adapters for you to check out as well as an article that will help you determine which is the best one for your application.

I have also attached some videos on the various products for you to reference as well.
