Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on a 2001 Toyota Highlander
Question:
in the diagram, the #118413 harness looks like it connects to both tail lights. yet in the video, there is just one plug with a ground wiremuch simpler. what is the simplest connection i can use? and what about if im using a 7 pin connector, not the 4 pin is there an extra hot wire and brake wire that need to be tapped into?? thanks! thanks!!

In order to install a 7-Way trailer connector on your 2001 Toyota Highlander, you must first install a 4-Way. There is more than 1 option for you vehicle. If the vehicle came with a factory tow package, you would use # 118245, which is a replacement wiring harness. If your Highlander never came with the wiring harness or tow package, you will need to use # 118413. Installation of this harness is not difficult and I have included a link to the installation details for you.
After the 4-Way has been installed you will need to install a 4 and 7 Way installation kit, # ETBC7. This will provide a 7-Way while retaining the use of the 4-Way on the vehicle. It also provides all of the wiring and circuit breakers needed to install a brake controller. I have included a links to an FAQ and video showing a typical installation of an ETBC7 for you.
If you need a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our best selling controllers because it is easy to set up and use. I have included a link to the installation details for it as well.
