Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for Towing with a 2018 Ford F-150 5-1/2 Bed

Question:

I am wanting to tow a small 5th wheel trailer with my 2018 F-150 but it has a 5-1/2 foot bed and I am concerned about how much room I will have when turning with a sliding hitch. Is there anything else out there that might give me more room so I don't hit my cab?

Since you have the 5-1/2' bed on your 2018 Ford F-150 what you need to do is use a stationary 5th wheel hitch and replace the pin box on your trailer with a Sidewinder or 5th Airborne Premium with the Sidewinder.

The 5th wheel hitch I recommend using is the Reese Select Plus 20K # RP30081 because it features a superior single-jaw for 360 degrees of king pin contact and the higher weight capacity so that you have a safety margin (be sure not to exceed the weight rating of your F-150). This 5th wheel hitch also has a 4-Way pivoting head and 4" of height adjustment for easy hookup and level towing. For this to work with the Sidewinder you need the Wedge # SWW-01 to lockout the king pin.

To install this in the bed of your F-150 you also need base rails. Out of the available options I recommend going with the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit # RP50087-58 which are easier to install over universal kits as they do not require drilling into the frame of your pickup.

A Sidewinder is locked out at the king pin and rotates at the turret so that you have 22" of turning clearance. If you have the common 1621 pin box number then you would use part # RP34FR or # RP61422 respectively. Let me know if you have a different pin box number and I can recommend the correct option for you.

If you don't already have a 7-Way connector in the bed of your F-150 then I also recommend installing the Hopkins # 41157 to make connecting and disconnecting your wiring much easier. You may also be interested in the padlock # ML1KA and base rail lock # TR63254 to lock the jaws of your hitch around the king pin and the legs of the hitch to your base rails.
