Options for Adding Brakes to Sundowner Trailer with 7K Axles
Question:
7200 lbs axels. How expensive are brake assemblies and drums
asked by: Chad
Expert Reply:
Adding drum brakes to a trailer that does not have them is usually least costly and easiest if you select electric rather than hydraulic drum brakes. Electric brakes need only basic wiring for installation and require a trailer brake controller in the tow vehicle, such as the Prodigy P3 # 90195.
I linked a whole series of articles on the subject of adding brakes to a trailer. There are articles for electric, hydraulic and disc types.
Many customers prefer to avoid the process of matching up all the required brake parts by just installing new axle kits like the 7K Dexter kit # 8327834-EB which include the 7K-rated axle beam, electric brake assemblies, hubs, drums, bearings, races, seals, and mounting hardware. There is no worry about compatibility of parts when you select a complete axle kit with brakes.
